Dr Bhattacharjee is currently the Group Director, Research Development and Technology, Tata Steel Group, stationed at the IJmuiden in the Netherlands. He is leading the transformation of the research of Tata Steel Europe (earlier Corus RD&T) and Tata Steel India & Asia (at Jamshedpur) into a global Tata Steel Research organisation with focus on alignment with corporate strategy and speed of delivery.
He did his BTech from Jadavpur University in India, MTech from Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur in India and PhD from the University of Cambridge, UK. He has also carried out post doctoral research at the Rolls Royce University Technology Centre in Cambridge and at the University of Birmingham.
His areas of expertise include fracture and fatigue of materials, physical metallurgy of rolling, and application of artificial neural networks in industry. His personal technical contribution spans a wider area, from mineral beneficiation, to development of new technology for generating hydrogen at low cost and development of advanced coolants using nanofluids.
He was awarded the Metallurgist of the Year award by the Govt of India in 2004. In 2008 his contribution to engineering was nationally recognised through Fellowship of Indian National Academy of Engineering (FNAE) and in 2011 he received the Fellowship of the Bengal Academy of Science & Technology. In 2010, Dr Bhattacharjee became Industrial Professor at the University of Warwick, UK, where he delivers periodic lectures and is involved in setting direction for teaching and research.
Dr Bhattacharjee is also the Chairman of the Flat & Long Steel Sectional Committee of the Bureau of Indian Standards. He is a member of the Governing Council of the The Welding Institute (TWI) in UK.
Dr Bhattacharjee has 50 peer reviewed international publications and has filed 21 patents. He has been Chairman of the Jamshedpur chapters of Indian Institute of Metals, Indian Institute of Mineral Engineers and the Indian Institute of Welding. He was a Director on the Board of Tata Advanced Materials Ltd
Dr Bhattacharjee hobbies include aeromodelling (fabricating and flying model aeroplanes) and studying ancient history of India. He is a founder member of the Jamshedpur Aeromodelling Club and an expert on control-line aerobatics.
