Research:

  • Computational biology
  • Metagenomics
  • Human microbiome

The Borenstein lab focuses on computational study of the human microbiome and of other complex microbial ecosystems. We are broadly interested in the integration of systems biology approaches, computational modeling, data science, and integrative meta-omic analysis to address fundamental questions in microbial ecology and to gain a systems-level, principled, mechanistic understanding of the microbiome. We develop a variety of computational methods and predictive models for studying the human microbiome, and aim to harness such methods for microbiome-based therapy. Specific research topics include:
Metagenomic systems biology, computational modeling, and design of the human microbiome.
Computational methods for multi-omic analysis of microbiome-derived data.
Application of machine learning and data science to microbiome reseaerch.
Model-based study of the relationship between the gut microbiome, metabolome, and diet.
Species interaction, community structure, and assembly rules of microbial communities.
Computational metagenomics and analysis of taxonomic and functional variation across health and disease.
Large scale computational study of complex biological networks.
