Prof. Levy Uriel

Prof. Uriel Levy joined the department of Applied Physics, School of Computer Science and Engineering at Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel as a senior lecturer in the fall of 2006. His research interests include nanophotonics and optofluidics with focus on the realization of novel nanophotonic components and devices for variety of applications. These include optical communication, nano-imaging, sensing, optical memories and optical signal processing. He received his B.Sc. in Physics and Materials Engineering (Cum Laude) from the Technion (1996), and his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering (with distinction) from Tel Aviv University(2002).

From 2003-2006 he was a post graduate researcher at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the University of California, San Diego, under the supervision of Prof. Yeshaiahu (Shaya) Fainman. He won various prizes and fellowships, including the Golda Meir Fellowship, the Rothschild Fellowship for postdoctoral studies, the Eshkol Fellowship for Ph.D. students and the Wolf Fellowship.

During the post doctoral research period, Dr. Levy pioneered the field of inhomogeneous dielectric metamaterials for free space on chip applications. This invention allows the realization of novel functionalities and refractive indices on integrated chips.
Prof. Levy was also a member of the DARPA Center for Optofluidic Integration, where he developed novel optofluidic devices.
He is an active member of the optical community, being a reviewer for several prestigious optical journals and vice chair of the OSA Diffraction and Holography technical group. He also serves as a committee member for several conferences, including the OSA Annual Meeting and the SPIE Photonics West.
