Advanced Cardiovascular Biomechanics Laboratory

Prof. Gil Marom’s laboratory at Tel Aviv University’s School of Mechanical Engineering specializes in cutting-edge computational modeling and numerical simulation of cardiovascular systems and medical devices. The lab combines sophisticated engineering approaches with clinical applications to address critical challenges in cardiac care and maternal-fetal health.

Core Research Capabilities:
• Cardiovascular Device Design & Optimization – Development and testing of innovative cardiac devices including left ventricular expanders for heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), utilizing advanced finite element modeling and fatigue analysis to optimize device performance and durability
• Cardiac Biomechanics & Surgical Planning – Comprehensive numerical investigation of mitral valve surgeries and heart failure mechanisms using fluid-structure interaction (FSI) modeling and computational fluid dynamics (CFD)
• Placental Circulation Modeling – Pioneering research in maternal-fetal oxygen transport through computational modeling of placental blood flow, tissue porosity distribution, and decidual vein configurations to understand pregnancy complications
• Patient-Specific Modeling – Development of digital twin heart models and semi-automated optimization algorithms for personalized medical device design and treatment planning

Multiphysics of spinal cord injuries

The laboratory’s unique strength lies in translating complex engineering simulations into clinically relevant insights, with demonstrated expertise in fatigue testing for long-term device durability, optimization of device configurations for specific patient populations, and understanding the biomechanical factors underlying cardiovascular pathologies. This multidisciplinary approach positions the lab as a bridge between advanced computational engineering and practical medical solutions.
