Water Quality and Sustainable Technologies Laboratory- Prof. Hadas Mamane Steindel

Prof. Hadas Mamane leads cutting-edge research dedicated to the disinfection and oxidation of contaminated water, wastewater, and solid waste. Her work integrates fundamental science with practical engineering, utilizing natural and induced ultraviolet (UV) photons, radicals, ozone, and advanced nanomaterials to solve global water challenges.

Prof. Mamane is a global expert in sustainable water solutions, serving as a visiting researcher at IIT Madras, India. Her lab bridges the gap between high-tech laboratory innovation and field-ready applications for low-income and off-grid communities.

Core Research Pillars

  • Advanced Oxidation & Disinfection: Developing next-generation water treatment by combining UV photons with ozone and radicals to eliminate resilient contaminants.
  • UV-LED Technology: Pioneering the transition from mercury-based lamps to UV-LEDs. These systems offer unprecedented design flexibility, custom wavelengths, zero warm-up time, and high energy efficiency.
  • AI-Driven Water Monitoring: Utilizing Artificial Intelligence and smartphone-based tools to monitor water quality and access in rural and resource-limited areas.
  • Sustainable Materials: Developing biodegradable membranes as eco-friendly alternatives to conventional plastics in water filtration systems.

Key Capabilities & Innovations

  • Off-Grid Solutions: Designing advanced water purification systems powered by solar energy, specifically tailored for decentralized and remote locations.
  • Hybrid Assessment Tools: Combining field-based surveys with specialized smartphone applications to analyze water quality and community practices in real-time.
  • Sustainable Filtration: Engineering eco-friendly “green” membranes to reduce the environmental footprint and eliminate plastic waste in filtration systems.
  • Scalable Treatment Technologies: Tailoring advanced oxidation and disinfection solutions for both large-scale industrial wastewater and local point-of-use drinking water.

The lab’s mission is to provide safe drinking water where it is needed most. By focusing on Point-of-Use (POU) technologies, Prof. Mamane’s team empowers low-income communities with sustainable, easy-to-maintain systems. Their work in India and other developing regions demonstrates a commitment to combining technological excellence with social responsibility.
